Extreme heat and intense bushfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures expected to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been issued across much of the south-west.

Broad Heatwave Warnings Throughout the Region

This situation follow this month's bushfires in another state, which caused the destruction of homes and fatalities. Severe heatwave warnings have also been activated for the coming days in parts of SA and NSW, as a ridge of high pressure shifts eastward, bringing blazing heat to a broad swath of the region.

The combination of tinder-dry land and relentless high temperatures presents a volatile scenario for firefighters.

Global Weather Extremes Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a metropolis was left in darkness last week after powerful winds compromised the city’s electrical network, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables. The stormy weather also caused major travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Severe damage to electrical infrastructure is anticipated to cause further issues as service providers scramble to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Mist Covers Typically Clear Region

At the same time, a region famed for its sunny weather and plentiful sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and foggiest periods on recorded history. A particular form of fog, which typically lingers for only a few days, has been remarkably widespread and persistent this year, keeping temperatures at a major airport under 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The prolonged fog has been fuelled by exceptional autumn precipitation that left the ground waterlogged.

Storm Brings Wintry Weather to Tourist Destination

And in Spain, a weather system has brought heavy rainfall, strong gales and even snowfall to a set of islands – conditions many would not associate with this favored holiday destination. While snow is not unheard of at elevated areas, the system delivered some of the heaviest snow depths since 2016 to a protected area, compelling its closure.

Alongside the snowfall, fierce winds from the north buffeted the island chain, with wind gusts exceeding 50mph recorded on multiple locations. The effect of the weather event is forecast to diminish this week with more typical conditions returning.
