A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the main draw.

Setting a New Record

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
