A senior Russian general has been killed following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The attack occurred on Monday morning when an bomb planted beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
Investigators indicated that one theory under investigation involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has offered no public response.
Site of the Attack
Officials have been dispatched to the scene, which is said to be in a southerly district of the metropolis.
Accounts state the blast took place in a vehicle lot close to a residential building.
History of Assaults
Since the start of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military officials have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.
This new event follows other high-profile incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a device hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a informant previously attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are rarely officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.
The conflict has increasingly seen covert operations extending into the streets of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death is still ongoing.
