According to the UN refugee agency, in excess of 60,000 civilians have left the city in Sudan of el-Fasher, which was seized by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces over the weekend.

Accounts suggest multiple executions and crimes against humanity as militia members entered the city after an year-and-a-half siege characterized by food shortages and sustained attacks.

The exodus of those fleeing the conflict towards the community of Tawila, roughly 80km (50 miles) to the west of el-Fasher, had increased in the past few days, as stated by UNHCR spokesperson.

They were narrating shocking tales of atrocities, including rape, and the humanitarian group was struggling to locate enough shelter and nourishment for them.

Each child was experiencing undernourishment, she added.

It is estimated that over 150,000 individuals are presently stranded in el-Fasher, which had been the military's last stronghold in the western part of Darfur.

The Rapid Support Forces has denied extensive allegations that the deaths in el-Fasher are ethnically motivated and mirror a practice of the Arab militia groups attacking ethnic minorities.

Nevertheless the RSF has custodied one of its members, Abu Lulu, who has been accused of extrajudicial killings.

The force shared video depicting the militiaman's apprehension following identification that he was involved in the killing of several unarmed men close to el-Fasher.

Video sharing service has verified that it has banned the profile connected to Lulu. Uncertainty exists whether he had controlled the profile in his name.

Sudan was plunged into a civil war in April 2023 after a vicious power struggle broke out between its army and the Rapid Support Forces.

This has resulted in a famine and claims of genocide in the Darfur area.

More than 150,000 individuals have been killed in the conflict throughout the country, and approximately 12 million have abandoned their dwellings in what the United Nations has called the world's largest humanitarian crisis.

The capture of el-Fasher reinforces the territorial division in the country, with the Rapid Support Forces now in dominance of Sudan's west and a large portion of adjacent Kordofan to the southern area, and the military controlling the main city, Khartoum, the center and east along the Red Sea.

The opposing sides had been partners - coming to power together in a takeover in 2021 - but fell out over an internationally backed plan to advance to civilian rule.
