It's a bit embarrassing to reveal, but here goes. A handful of titles wait beside my bed, every one partially finished. Inside my smartphone, I'm partway through 36 listening titles, which looks minor alongside the nearly fifty digital books I've left unfinished on my Kindle. That does not count the growing collection of early editions next to my side table, vying for praises, now that I work as a professional novelist myself.

Starting with Dogged Finishing to Intentional Letting Go

Initially, these figures might appear to confirm recently expressed thoughts about current focus. An author observed recently how simple it is to lose a person's focus when it is divided by online networks and the news cycle. He remarked: “Maybe as readers' concentration change the literature will have to change with them.” But as an individual who once would doggedly finish any novel I started, I now regard it a human right to stop reading a novel that I'm not enjoying.

Our Finite Time and the Wealth of Possibilities

I wouldn't believe that this tendency is a result of a limited focus – more accurately it relates to the awareness of existence slipping through my fingers. I've always been impressed by the monastic maxim: “Keep death every day in mind.” Another idea that we each have a only 4,000 weeks on this world was as horrifying to me as to others. However at what previous time in human history have we ever had such instant availability to so many mind-blowing masterpieces, at any moment we want? A wealth of options meets me in each bookstore and within any device, and I strive to be purposeful about where I focus my attention. Is it possible “DNF-ing” a book (shorthand in the book world for Unfinished) be rather than a sign of a poor focus, but a thoughtful one?

Selecting for Connection and Self-awareness

Especially at a time when publishing (and therefore, commissioning) is still dominated by a specific social class and its concerns. Although engaging with about individuals distinct from us can help to build the capacity for compassion, we furthermore choose books to think about our own experiences and position in the world. Genres shift with the times and we should allow them.
